Did you know... that Beara has the only cable car in Ireland? It connects Dursey Island with the mainland. The first Cable Car was built for Dursey Island in 1969, when Jack Lynch was Taoiseach. This Cable Car was very important for the island when there were still people living on it as it made it much easier to get livestock (yes, that does include sheep and cows!!!) and other essential food supplies into the island. However, when more and more people started to emigrate from the island, it was used less and less. It was reopened for full time use in 1995 as a tourist attraction.
