The Victoria Falls are located on the Zambezi River near the town of Livingstone in southern Zambia.
David Livingstone was to first European to discover the falls. In early November 1855, Livingstone travelled down the Zambezi River to see for himself the area the natives called "Mosi oa Tunya" (Smoke that thunders). Approaching the spot in canoes, the group could see the spray and hear the thunderous roar of water miles away from the falls. When they saw the actual falls Livingstone was amazed by their size. He decided to rename them after the British queen of the time; Queen Victoria.
The Victoria Falls has the biggest sheet of falling water in the world and so claims to be the largest waterfall on earth. In recent years the Zambian government has spent large amounts of money to develop tourism in the area. It is now estimated that one million tourists visit the falls every year.
